The Ham Floor Sanding Experts!
Elizabeth, Lady Dysart, became mistress of Ham House when her father died with no male heirs. He had been the ‘whipping boy’ of the Prince of Wales, later Charles the First, taking the punishment for his misdemeanours. Perhaps it was worth the pain - for this youthful friendship brought a peerage and the lease of the manors of Ham and Petersham.
His pretty and charming daughter married her second husband, the Duke of Lauderdale in 1672, a mere six weeks after he became a widower.
The Duke was one of the King’s ministers and the couple ‘lived at a vast rate’. The house soon proved too small for their ambitions. Enlarged by 1675 and furnished with extravagance, what we see today is largely Elizabeth’s creation....
